IMPROVING HEALTH AND QUALITY OF LIFE FOR CHILDREN LIVING WITH SICKLE CELL DISEASE THALASSEMIA IN LEICESTRSHIRE

The COMFORT Centre Leicester project is a vital initiative aimed at supporting and uplifting disadvantaged, needy, and neglected children who are living with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) and other blood-related disorders in the Leicestershire region. The primary focus of the project is to empower these vulnerable children by providing them with the tools, resources, and emotional support needed to improve their quality of life, while also offering a space of comfort and understanding.

The project is targeting one thousand (1000) children living with SCD in the Leicestershire region.

  • Social Inclusion and Activities: Living with a chronic illness often leads to social exclusion, as children may miss out on regular social activities due to their health. COMFORT Centre organizes various social events, workshops, and recreational activities where children can interact with their peers in a fun and supportive environment. These activities are tailored to accommodate the children’s health needs while giving them opportunities for personal growth, building friendships, and boosting confidence
  • Medical Support and Awareness: The COMFORT Centre aims to bridge the gap between healthcare services and the affected children by promoting awareness of Sickle Cell Disease and other blood-related conditions. The project works closely with healthcare providers, offering families guidance on accessing the best medical care available, including treatments, therapies, and support groups. Additionally, the centre provides education to both the children and their families, helping them better understand the condition and manage it effectively.
  • Psychological and Emotional Comfort: Children living with SCD often face emotional and psychological challenges due to the pain and limitations associated with the disease. The COMFORT Centre serves as a safe space where children can express their emotions, receive counseling, and participate in activities designed to boost self-esteem and resilience. The goal is to reduce the feelings of isolation and anxiety that many of these children experience by fostering a supportive community.
  • Educational Support: SCD can severely impact a child's ability to engage in education due to frequent hospital visits, pain episodes, or fatigue. The project provides educational resources and tutoring to ensure that children do not fall behind in their studies. Special attention is given to help them stay on track academically and achieve their educational goals despite the health challenges they face.

At COMFORT Centre Leicester, all staff and volunteers working with children undergo DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) checks to ensure the safety and well-being of the children in their care. This measure reinforces the centre’s commitment to providing a secure, supportive environment for vulnerable children.
